How to prepare for a winter trip to the mountains? Safety first
Mountains in the winter mean unforgettable views, a chance to experience a genuine adventure and to find respite from the bustle of the city. But it also means quite a challenge for our stamina and many dangers awaiting us. When planning a trip, we have to think about the safety of participants first and stick to basic trail etiquette. It’s important to:
-
keep on checking weather forecast, as well as avalanche forecast provided by GOPR and TOPR,
-
choose trails attainable for all trip participants, especially if we’re venturing into the mountains with children,
-
keep your group together; don’t split and don’t hike alone,
-
add GOPR emergency phone numbers to your contacts.

Winter trip to the mountains – planning is key
Planning your trip well is fundamental to keep you safe during a winter escape in the mountains. Trail conditions are difficult during the year’s coldest months. Look before you leap and plan your hike wisely. Choosing the right trail is important. Length and difficulty level should be adjusted to the abilities of all participants of your winter mountain hike, especially inexperienced trekkers.
Tip: looking for a beginner-friendly winter hiking trip idea? Choose easy and popular trails.
When planning a hike remember that we may encounter many surprises while conquering trails in winter and adverse weather, walking on icy surface or through deep snow may slow us down. It’s worth considering these issues when estimating the planned hiking time. Setting out early is another important issue. It gets dark early in the winter, so let’s plan the hike in such a way so as to return to a safe place to stay before dark.
Last but not least, don’t forget to check weather forecast and avalanche forecast issued by emergency services. If it’s necessary, just turn back or switch to a safer route.
What to take to the mountains in winter? List
A winter trip to the mountains requires proper equipment that enhances the comfort and safety of the hike and might save our life in emergency situations. What to pack for a winter hike in the mountains? The list should certainly include the following:
-
map and compass – even if our phone has a built-in GPS system, it’s worth preparing for such scenarios as no reception or device malfunction,
-
first aid kit with a space blanket,
-
headlamp – might turn out to be necessary if it gets dark while we’re still on a trail,
-
phone with an emergency phone numbers added,
-
equipment for winter trekking: trekking poles, ice axe, snowshoes (for snowy trails), crampons (for slippery surfaces) and a climbing helmet (for rocky terrain),
-
food supplies – preferably energy-dense foods that can be consumed even at sub-zero temperatures and a thermos with a hot beverage,
-
spare clothing – extra layers, a second pair of socks and gloves.
How to dress for the mountains in winter? Practical tips
Appropriate clothing is also key in the mountains in winter. We have to consider low temperatures, gusty wind and falling snow. Layer up: a layered outfit and clothes made of functional fabrics will work best. What to wear for a mountain hike in winter?
-
Base layer: thermal underwear. A thermal shirt and leggings will protect you against heat loss while effectively wicking away sweat and leaving our skin dry. Note: when dressing up for the mountains in winter, it’s best to avoid clothes made of cotton. This natural fabric will absorb sweat, become wet, and, as a result, cool your body.
-
Mid-layer: a fleece jacket or a woolen sweater, e.g. clothes made of merino wool. This layer is here to keep you warm even at very low temperatures.
-
Outer layer: outerwear. Membrane jacket and trousers will be a good choice. These clothes are windproof and waterproof, while allowing the skin to breathe and preventing overheating.
Accessories are also an indispensable part of your winter hiking outfit: high, warm trekking socks, a hat, an infinity scarf and gloves. Apart from the pieces we’re wearing, let’s remember to pack a spare set of clothes.

Which shoes to choose for winter hiking? Here are some tips
And which trekking shoes to wear during a winter hike in the mountains? Make sure they’re high-cut and have a proper tread. Such structure will keep your ankle in a stable position and will allow you to conquer even the icy sections of the trail. It’s important to ensure that shoes for winter hiking are made of durable, waterproof material. Styles with a membrane that do not allow water and moisture to pass through, while letting the skin breathe and wicking the sweat away, will work best. To improve safety on trail, it’s worth bringing microspikes. And if we’re planning to hike a more challenging trail, crampons and matching trekking shoes are a must.
