Safety and general rules: what should you take with you when winter swimming?
Cold water swimming makes sense when you approach it calmly. Do a short warm-up, enter the water gradually, and watch your breathing. Don't swim alone and choose places with easy access to the shore. Before your planned cold water swim, check what you need to take with you. In practice, this means not only a swimsuit, but also a hat, gloves, and water shoes to protect the most sensitive areas.
Once outside, act immediately: wrap yourself in a blanket or large towel, put on a set of dry clothes that you have packed beforehand. Put a thermos with a warm drink and a bag for wet clothes in your bag. If you or anyone else experiences dizziness, uncontrollable shivering, or severe discomfort during winter swimming, stop the activity and warm up on the shore.
What should you take with you when winter swimming with your child... and how to winter swim wisely?
When thinking about what to take with you for winter swimming with your child, focus mainly on what happens after getting out of the water. Children cool down much faster, so a thick poncho, down jacket, or very large towel is essential. After winter swimming, a set of dry clothes is necessary – thermal underwear, pants, a sweatshirt, warm socks and shoes, and a spare dry hat. Also, throw a thermos with a warm drink and a small snack into your backpack.
And age? In practice, there are different approaches, but...
cautious recommendations often say: not earlier than around 6 or even 12 years of age, regardless of health and tolerance to cold.
The potential benefits of winter swimming for older children mainly include: stimulation of the immune system, improved circulation, and better oxygenation of the body. However, it is always a good idea to prepare well for this – do not lose control, do not put pressure on your child, and consult your pediatrician.
Winter swimming – what to take: a list for a spontaneous trip
Are you leaving in a moment and wondering what to take with you for cols water swimming? When packing spontaneously, it's easy to overlook something, and here the little things have a real impact on your comfort and health. That's why you need a checklist! It reduces preparation time to a minimum and helps you take care of the most important part, i.e., what you put on after getting out of the water.
Prepare and always have our checklist handy. It is available online and can be downloaded in PDF format, so you can print it out for yourself or for the walrus who will be with you. This way, even a quick decision does not mean chaos, but helps to create a safe plan of action.
