Short summary
What to pack for a mountain getaway? Extra clothes are fundamental
It’s no secret that weather in the mountains can be capricious. That’s why it’s better to prepare for all weathers when packing your backpack for a trek. Regardless of the season of the year, pack a rain jacket. You can also pack extra layers of clothing: a warmer sweatshirt or light softshell jacket. Even if you’re starting your adventure in beautiful sunny weather, it may get colder on your way to the top. Warmer clothes will protect you against cold wind, rainfall or low temperature.
Pro tip: when building your equipment, pay attention to make sure that your hiking clothing is practical and functional, yet lightweight. Every pound less in your backpack improves your hiking comfort.
First of all: safety. Hiker’s first aid kit
Mountains guarantee unforgettable memories and breathtaking views – but there are many a dangers awaiting us. To be prepared for any emergency situation, put a first aid kit in your trekking backpack. Corn and wound plasters, hydrogen peroxide, insect bite gel and painkillers are the fundamentals that you should take with you – just in case.
Food for hiking. What should you pack?
A hike that lasts a few hours is quite a challenge for everybody. That’s the reason why, when planning the trip, you should start thinking about foods that will replenish your energy and let you reach the top full of strength. These may be sandwiches, but healthy, energy-dense snacks, such as 4F Fuel bars for athletes, will work perfectly too. They’re not only a rich source of essential nutrients – they also taste great and can be easily stored in your backpack.

Water and beverages – a key element of your mountain gear
Proper hydration is another crucial issue. Regardless of the season of the year and weather conditions, you will need extra fluids during your trek. Water works great, but it’s worth choosing sports drink on hot days. A thermos with hot tea is recommended in autumn and winter. It will keep you warm on your way to the top in low temperatures.

Map and compass – a hiker’s essentials
Though these items seem to be a part of an era gone by, it’s worth to throw them into your hiking backpack. On our way to the top we can lose reception, the phone battery can die or break down, while a map and compass will help you stay on your trail and, in the worst case, find your way back – even if technology fails you.

Flashlight, batteries, electronic equipment – how to pack a hiking backpack?
A hiking backpack isn’t complete without tech gadgets that make our lives easier. Apart from your smartphone, throw in a powerbank – a portable charger. A flashlight, headlamp and extra batteries are also essential. These won’t take up a lot of space in your backpack, but might save your adventure when it gets dark while you’re still on the trail.
Trekking accessories – it’s worth putting these items in your hiking backpack
Is there more? It’s best to use any leftover space in your trekking backpack for accessories that improve your hiking comfort. Sunglasses with high protection against UV radiation are a must, not only in summer. A multi-functional bandana will come in handy, while gloves, hat, and an infinity scarf will be useful in autumn and winter. If you’re aiming for higher sections of the mountains, grab trekking poles and a helmet too.
