🎒 The right equipment is essential for safety - in winter in the mountains, you will need, among other things, a charged phone, a headlamp, a first aid kit with NRC foil, a thermos with a warm drink, and - in more difficult conditions - crampons, an ice axe, and a GPS.
-
🧥 Layered clothing protects against cold and moisture – thermal underwear, an insulating layer (fleece), and a jacket with a membrane allow you to maintain thermal comfort even in changeable weather.
-
🥾 Winter trekking boots must provide stability – good traction, thermal insulation, a waterproof membrane, and compatibility with crampons are key.
-
🌦 Winter weather can be treacherous – before setting out, be sure to check the forecast, avalanche risk, and length of daylight hours; in winter, routes can take up to twice as long to complete as in summer.
-
🧭 Route planning and common sense save lives – choose trails that match your experience, walk in a group, and always inform your loved ones about your planned route and return time.
What to take with you to the mountains in winter? - a brief summary
Beware of temperature and other weather factors
The difference between summer and winter weather seems obvious. That's why we always check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly before embarking on a hike lasting several hours or even days. Still, remember that the feel-like temperature will be far lower than the value indicated on a thermometer! This is due to humidity, wind and exacerbating fatigue. These factors, if not foreseen in advance, may even lead to hypothermia in extreme situations.
In addition to the temperature, the sun can also be a problem! Although we tend to think its rays are not warming us up, we may be affected by such issues as sunstroke, burns or swelling.
What to pack for mountains in the winter, so that the sun doesn’t take us by surprise? Before hitting the trail, it's a good idea to apply sunscreen to create a protective layer on the skin. The sun is up in the sky, its rays bouncing off the snow, making it impossible to move effortlessly. Sports sunglasses will be a lifesaver, so always have them on hand.
Fog, which obscures tourist signs and landmarks, also poses a great danger as it causes disorientation. Combined with wind, it may lead to a significant decrease in body temperature. If you notice dense fog rising, you're better off staying away from the trail.
The snow cover also changes in the winter -it can be very light in some places and wet or icy elsewhere. It’s never uniform due to varying temperatures and winds, which are most severe on peaks and ridges. If we want to be well prepared for winter hiking in the mountains, we should be able to distinguish between the basic types of snow cover and know how to traverse them safely.
Interestingly, winter makes it is easier to forecast the weather in the mountains based on the pressure and its tendency to change! If the pressure is high and keeps on rising, beautiful weather is almost guaranteed.
What to wear in the mountains in winter? What to wear for a winter hike?
-
planned route,
-
duration of the adventure,
-
weather conditions.
A successful winter mountain adventure involves well-selected sportswear and the type of clothing depends on:
-
protection from the cold,
-
effortless maintenance of balance on various snow covers,
-
unrestricted movement in varied terrain.
Clothing for a winter hike should ensure:
Clothing for a winter trek: underwear
What to wear for a winter hike to stay warm? Thermal underwear should be worn as the first layer and it should fit snugly while providing good breathability. Both the top and bottom piece will help maintain a constant body temperature and guarantee maximum freedom of movement. If you are hiking in very low temperatures, fleece and French terry knit underwear will be a good choice - as the second layer of clothing to protect your body from hypothermia. The former is made of soft and lightweight microfleece, while the latter is sewn from knitted fabric and lined with a fine brushed material. Both will perform well in harsh weather conditions. When choosing a given item, we recommend paying particular attention to elements such as a stand-up collar or pockets that improve its functionality. Pieces designed this way are perfect as clothes for a winter trek.
Which jacket will be the best for winter hiking?
In case of very low temperatures, let's also put on a fleece sweatshirt, which boosts the body's insulation mechanisms. Always wear hiking trousers, which should have an insulated inner layer and adjustable waist or legs. Membrane is of key importance in these pieces, as it is to provide optimal protection during changing weather conditions, especially against wind and moisture. When hiking in the mountains in winter, a warm jacket is essential. A softshell piece with a membrane will be a great choice. It should also be DWR treated and have a microfleece lining. This type of clothing will provide long-lasting comfort on the trail.
If you're wondering what kind of jacket for winter trekking won't let you down even in very low temperatures, go for another solution. Wear two layers of jackets! A thinner functional one and a softshell piece.
Winter trekking shoes
Don't forget about trekking shoes while planning to hit the trail. These must be durable and fit for harsh weather. Footwear is the most important part of an outfit for the mountains, so when deciding on a particular model, make sure it has good traction, a shaped sole, and a high-quality upper that will not sustain any damage in contact with snow or ice.
-
Thermal insulation - it will keep you comfortable even in freezing temperatures.
-
Membrane - wicks away water vapour, protects against snow and moisture.
-
High upper - an indispensable part of boots for winter trekking.
-
Hard sole with good grip - ensures safety on glaciated trails.
-
Compatibility with crampons - a feature appreciated by any aficionado of challenging trails.
-
Fit - boots for winter trekking should provide enough room for thick socks.
-
Reinforced elements - increase footwear durability.
How to choose the best boots for a winter hike? Look out for these features:
Trekking in winter - clothes are important, just like accessories!
For winter trekking, you need to bring clothes... and accessories. A beanie, gloves, scarf or sports socks are all essential items to protect the body against hypothermia. Special styles designed to protect the wearer from cold and harsh conditions are your best bet.
Your backpack should be light but well-equipped - so what to take for a winter hike?
In winter, opt for a small, yet roomy backpack. See the earlier article to learn how to choose a good hiking backpack.
-
First of all, remember about a charged cell phone to call for help in case of emergency.
-
A headlamp is key after dusk.
-
Extra batteries are not heavy, and it is better to have them on hand.
-
When hiking on snowy and glaciated trails, crampons and an ice axe may be useful.
-
Some people also take hiking poles, while others prefer to leave them at home due to excess weight.
-
We recommend packing hot tea in a hot bottle and snacks in your to give you an energy boost when needed.
-
Of course, a mountain first-aid kit with a space blanket is also essential to reduce heat loss during an emergency.
-
If the trip is challenging orientation-wise, it is a good idea to take a GPS with you.
-
If you are planning a longer hike involving an overnight stay, you will need to bring a down sleeping bag and a tent equipped with a snow skirt and a vestibule to store your gear.
-
Gas and camping cooking equipment are also necessary.
What to take to the mountains in winter? Here's a list of essentials:
Remember that winter hikes spanning several days are not a good idea for people who have never experienced snowy trails.
How to prepare and safely hike in winter?
Before hitting the trails in winter, reasonably plan the route and its walking time
This is a much more difficult feat than in summer, as you have to take into account shorter day and sunset time. As for hiking time, remember that covering the same distance will take anywhere from 1.5 to twice as long! Proper navigation may also pose a significant problem. While in summer it suffices to follow the signs, in winter they may be covered with snow or simply invisible due to fog or precipitation. Not feeling confident navigating a given mountain range? You’re better off choosing an easier trail.
In winter, it’s walking down the mountain that is more problematic than hiking up.
Do not descend facing forwards; turn back to face the slope. When hiking in a group, keep greater distance so that falling snow does not bother other hikers.
Before hitting the trail, make sure to check the weather and avalanche forecast.
In winter, the weather changes very quickly, and if meteorologists predict even negligible snowfall, it is better to move the adventure to another day.
In winter, many difficult trails are closed (e.g. in the Tatra Mountains), so make sure the trail you've chosen is accessible.
To stay safe, it is recommended to venture into the mountains in winter as part of a larger group
Why? Besides having companions to talk to, in case of an accident one person will stay with someone injured and the others will set out to seek help. Before leaving for a winter mountain adventure, it is recommended to inform your relatives about the chosen trail and the estimated return time. If we fail to return as planned, we can be sure that someone will set out to rescue us.
Put together a perfect outfit
As we mentioned earlier, in order to safely complete a winter hike, it is important to make sure you have the right clothing to keep you comfortable and protect against hypothermia. It is also very important to bring extra accessories - in some situations they can save our lives!
Where to hike in winter?
At this stage you should already know how to plan the route; you know what dangers may await you and how to dress for a winter hike. If your first winter hike is in Poland, it's time to learn about the brief characteristics of selected ranges. The most mountainous area in our country is Lesser Poland, which is perfect for summer and winter adventures. The Beskids are characterised by dense forest cover and considerable relative altitude. At the same time, there are many shelters along trails and they can be easily accessed by car from a trail’s starting point.
The famous Babia Góra massif with its highest peak, Babia Góra, is a place where we can encounter all the dangerous factors - sudden changes in weather, winds, low temperatures or problems navigating the area. If it’s your first winter hike, it is recommended to leave out this peak. The Tatra Mountains, which are the only Polish mountain range with an alpine nature, will pose numerous problems for those embarking on a winter hiking adventure.
Safe winter hiking in the Tatra Mountains requires plenty of experience, good knowledge of the terrain and the ability to use specialised mountain equipment. What’s more, this mountain range has special safety regulations that prohibit, for example, pitching tents or sleeping in snow caves. In winter, there is a very high avalanche danger in the Tatra Mountains - and that’s something we should always check before hitting the trail.
