Short summary:
Spring - time to get back in shape!
We tend to spend plenty of time indoors during winter. The body's increased demand for calories, more sleep, less access to light and limited exercise can all contribute to laziness and a decline in both physical condition and motivation to act. When starting your summer season in the mountains, it is recommended to be as fit as possible. So let's remember that winter doesn't necessarily have to be a time for lazing around. Fans of downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating know it best. Let's not forget that many sports can be practised all year round, regardless of the weather outside.
Regular workouts during winter are a great way to stay in shape all year round. On the other hand, gradually increasing the intensity or frequency of exercise in the last weeks of winter will certainly bring the desired results during the first spring days on the trail.

Mountain adventures in the spring – what to wear?
The first signs of spring in cities or lowlands do not necessarily mean perfect conditions in the mountains. Trekking clothing should therefore be adjusted to the weather expected at a given peak. We must not forget that the first weeks of spring are the time when winter conditions still prevail in the mountains. So what to wear in the mountains in spring if one can still expect snow on the trails?
Layered outfit
Let's not be fooled by appearances! Remember that despite more intense sunshine and nature waking up, a properly selected thermal underwear will come in handy while heading out to the mountains - not only in the winter. The base layer of the outfit is responsible for wicking away moisture and protecting against cold, so it should be form-fitting. Keep in mind that in the first weeks of spring, the temperature in the mountains can still drop to just a few degrees, and strong winds intensify the sensation of cold. Therefore a men's or women's fleece jacket will be perfect examples of a second layer that provides additional thermal insulation properties.
What jacket to wear in the mountains in the spring?
A softshell jacket provides protection against wind and moderate moisture. It also provides decent ventilation. A windstopper reinforced with a watertight membrane will also work well as a top layer. You should also consider taking some extra clothing. What’s also useful? A warm and lightweight trekking jacket that doesn’t take up much space in your backpack once compressed will come in handy while resting on the trail or walking down a mountain. However, if the predicted temperature is a bit higher, it is worth opting for a more lightweight attire. Women's spring jackets and men's spring jackets are available in a variety of options, so you can choose the best style for you regardless of the weather.
Trekking trousers
The trousers we use every day at home and at work won’t work on a hiking trail. Instead of jeans or tracksuit bottoms that absorb moisture and quickly become heavy and unpleasant to the touch, it is better to grab a pair of thin and quick-drying softshell trousers. This material has one more advantage: it's really easy to clean.
Hiking boots
Water running down the trails and remaining snow - all this combined with the first rays of spring sunshine make good mountain boots a necessity for a successful and safe trip to the mountains. However, the wide range of trekking boots can make your head spin. So what should we consider when deciding how to choose the best boots for your mountain trips? It’s important to ensure that the boots provide us with comfort, safety, and functionality while hiking - as much as possible. In practice, this means that the most important thing is paying attention to the soles of the shoes, the material from which they are made and whether they have a high upper.
Trekking accessories
Temperatures can be high on a March or April day, and conditions may seem almost summery - so much so that often sunglasses are the first thing we throw in our backpack for an early spring hike. However, let's not forget about a hat, gloves, ad an infinity scarf. Conditions during this period can be very changeable, and not having these accessories may result in a cold. Properly selected, breathable trekking socks are also an important part of trekking attire. They will help you avoid abrasions on the feet and ankles during hours of hiking.
Spring trekking - how to gear up?
When thinking about preparations for the next spring season in the mountains, it's worth checking whether we’ve got everything to fully enjoy your mountain adventure, and purchase any missing pieces if necessary. If we are sure that our mountain equipment is complete, it is worth taking the time to inspect its technical condition to avoid any unpleasant surprises on the trail.

The most important piece of mountain equipment? Undoubtedly a capacious trekking backpack. In this case, depending on individual needs, we can choose between smaller backpacks for shorter hikes, medium-sized backpacks that are sufficient for a two-day trip, and those with the largest capacity for multi-day hikes. The various styles also differ when it comes to frames and many additional functional properties.
When planning a trip and thinking about what to take to the mountains in the spring, it is worth making a list of essential items. This will save us time when packing and guarantee that we won't forget all the important little things. Perhaps this will also help us avoid carrying unnecessary items.
So what should be included on such a list?
-
Headlamp - weighs very little and takes up virtually no space in a backpack. It guarantees safety and comfort if we don't manage to finish our hike before dark.
-
Map - a phone with a map and GPS can get damaged or die, so it's a good idea to have a laminated map at hand - just in case, especially if it's our first time visiting a given area.
-
Power bank - sometimes there’s not a shelter in sight for miles on end. If a phone is our lifeline or we need it to navigate, it's a good idea to have a power bank in our backpack.
-
A pocket knife - useful in many situations, from starting a campfire, minor equipment repairs to food preparation.
-
First aid kit - it's good to be prepared for the worst. Should there be an accident, the basic supplies found in a first aid kit will make it possible to dress a wound and provide first aid to ourselves or our companions.
-
Rubbish bag - we always take our rubbish with us. It's also a good idea to take care of the local ecosystem and pick up any rubbish found along the way as well.

Spring in the mountains - general rules
Spring is knocking at the door. But let's not forget that weather conditions in the mountains differ a lot from those in the lowlands. If we enjoy solo hikes, let's not forget to inform someone where we’re headed. In emergency situations have the mountain rescue number ready and do not hesitate to use it.
The weather can be very changeable and conditions may be difficult, especially in early spring - let's keep this in mind when deciding what to wear in the mountains in the spring. Many accidents in the mountains result from inadequate gear preparation. Hence, it’s worth checking weather forecast while getting ready. Spend enough time planning the trip and thinking about multiple trip scenarios.
