How to dress for skiing?

Thoughtful pre-season training is important, but it is also worth remembering to properly prepare your equipment and ski clothing to protect yourself from the harshest weather conditions. Every seasoned skier has already worked out how to maintain skis and select the right clothing, but those just starting out or who have only been skiing a few seasons should refresh their knowledge. See how to choose your ski clothes to have a great time and return from the slopes without catching a cold.
In this article
-
Layer up: Wear three layers of clothing: a thermal base layer, a warming layer, and a protective outer layer. This will help you stay warm and dry while skiing.
-
Choose the right membrane rating: The membrane rating of your ski jacket and pants will determine their waterproofness and breathability. Choose a membrane rating that is appropriate for the weather conditions you will be skiing in.
-
Look for key features: When choosing ski clothing, look for features such as a hood, pockets, a powder skirt, and adjustable cuffs and hems. These features will help you stay comfortable and protected on the slopes.
-
Don't forget the accessories: In addition to ski clothing, you will also need accessories such as gloves, goggles, a helmet, and a neck gaiter. These accessories will help you stay warm and protected from the elements.
-
Protect your equipment: Transport your ski equipment in a ski and boot bag. This will protect it from the elements and damage.
-
Don't leave your equipment on the roof of your car: If you are driving to the ski resort, don't leave your ski equipment on the roof of your car. This will expose it to salt and dirt.
Short summary
Ski outfit for the trip
If you are fit and your equipment has been serviced, it's time to choose the right ski clothing. If this is not your first season, you are certainly already equipped with a suitable ski jacket, ski trousers, gloves, and a helmet. On the other hand, if your clothes didn't perform well last season, it is worth reviewing what you need on the slopes to keep you warm and protected from the snow.
How to choose clothes for skiing?
It is essential to wear 3 layers, consisting of:
-
Thermal underwear – this is the layer closest to the skin, so it should properly harmonise with it. Well-fitted underwear is pleasant to the touch, does not cut into your body and does not cause chafing. The first layer is designed to wick moisture to the outside and provide temperature regulation, which is why 4F products feature 4F Dry technology.
-
Warming layer – breathable and lightweight. This refers to a fleece jacket, a sweatshirt or trousers that retain the heat produced by our body.
-
Protective outer layer – this group includes insulated ski trousers and jacket, as well as accessories that protect against changing weather conditions. Before ordering shell outerwear, make sure it’s vapor-permeable and waterproof at the same time.
Ski clothing should be selected primarily based on technical aspects. Of course, you may want to match its level of sophistication to your skills and the frequency of your trips – if you actively spend every free moment on the slopes, you should choose the most advanced clothing. The most important qualities are excellent thermal insulation, waterproofing and breathability even in the most difficult weather conditions.
4F offers modern ski wear, which features a system of three interacting layers. Intermediate skiers can stock up on clothing from the basic or performance line. The differences are noticeable, among other things, in membrane ratings, types of fabrics, ventilation system or additional features like waterproof zippers. The clothing also comes with technical features like panels on the inside of the jacket and magnets in the cargo pockets.

Ski/snowboard jacket – which one to choose?
The basis of the outer layer of clothing is always a well-chosen ski jacket or snowboard jacket to protect you from the weather. Finding the perfect one may seem like a challenge, and the huge choice of models definitely does not make things easy, especially for beginners. Counterintuitively, it doesn't have to be difficult. Wondering what to look for when choosing a jacket for skiing or snowboarding? Two key parameters are what matters: waterproofness and breathability, which, in the case of outdoor outerwear, are usually determined by the membrane rating.

View productWhat is a membrane?
It is a type of material with microholes that does not allow water to pass through from the outside, but wicks away the water produced by your body due to intense exertion. We do not doubt that a ski jacket with a membrane is the best choice for skiing and snowboarding. Just which one to choose? Depending on in what conditions you happen to be hitting the slopes, you can choose from:
-
Ski jackets with a 5,000-8,000 membrane rating will work well in moderate rain or snow,
-
Ski jackets with a 10,000-15,000 membrane rating are suitable for harsher weather conditions and more intense precipitation,
-
Ski jackets with a 20,000 membrane rating will provide protection against severe wing and getting wet during a downpour or snowstorm.
It is a good idea to match the membrane rating of your ski jacket to your preferred riding conditions. If you are not hitting the slopes in very severe weather conditions, a 5,000- or 8,000-mm membrane is definitely sufficient.
In addition, all 4F ski jackets are impregnated against moisture absorption and feature technologies that wick away perspiration and leave your skin dry and effectively protected against heat loss, ensuring you stay warm in all conditions.
When choosing the right jacket for skiing and snowboarding, it is also worth paying attention to details such as the hood, pockets or the powder skirt, which prevents snow from getting under the garment as well as the design! Among 4F ski jackets, you will find models that combine advanced technical parameters and top quality with a fashionable style. This will make buying your perfect jacket a pure pleasure.
How to choose ski/snowboard trousers? Useful tips
Good ski or snowboard trousers are also essential on the slopes. Which ones should you choose? As with jackets, it's worth opting for a model with a membrane, which will effectively protect you from the weather and keep moisture away from your skin. To enjoy comfort on the slopes, let's also take a look at their styles.
Ski trousers and snowboard trousers differ in cut. The former fit more tightly to the body and often have braces or a high rise and leg adjustment, which allows the ski trousers to fit perfectly for maximum comfort. Snowboard trousers, on the other hand, are baggier, looser and have more pockets. The cut is best matched to your preferred discipline. The colour is also important. The brighter the colour you choose, the more visible you will be on the slopes.
In addition, 4F ski and snowboard trousers are equipped with a number of technologies that increase your riding comfort and protection against cold, rain, wind or snow, such as: Thermodry System (responsible for better ventilation of the trousers) and DWR (impregnation for waterproofing). Simply choose the right size and colour to fully enjoy winter activities and avoid discomfort even in difficult weather conditions!
We have written more about how to buy the right ski jacket or trousers in our previous posts, so we encourage you to refer back to our advice on choosing the ski clothing and accessories you will need during the active season:
It is also worth remembering a winter beanie, balaclava, scarf and ski socks, which are mentioned less often but are no less important when skiing.
Ski equipment in good working order
Even if your equipment performed well last season, you should have it serviced, for example, to check the condition of your bindings. If your bindings are quite old, you should consider replacing them. Always ask the service technician to adjust the individual release force so that the bindings only respond when you really need them to.
Before the season, of course, the edges of your skis should be sharpened. Make sure they are well polished, not only on the side of the ski, but also on the base side. This will keep them sharp for longer and make them easier to manoeuvre. The more difficult the slope and the more difficult the conditions, the more you will feel the effects of poorly prepared skis, especially if you enjoy carving.
Everyone knows that skis need to be waxed. The paraffin applied to the surface guarantees optimum gliding and protects the structure of the equipment from drying out. Remember to regularly wax your skis once every few days of skiing, as their structure deteriorates quickly, and snow will easily stick to them over time. It is also a good idea to ask the service technician to use a lubricant appropriate to the expected weather conditions – for cold and hard snow, paraffin that lasts longer on the bases, and for wet snow, a fluorine-based lubricant that repels water particles.
Pay attention to how you transport your skis, as they must not move against each other during the journey. Carrying unprotected equipment on the car roof exposes it to the damaging effects of salt and dirt. Also make sure you have the right ski and boot bags.
