How to care for shoes? Basic tips
Neat, impeccable shoes are always a good outfit base item. To make them last for many seasons and look like they've been just taken out of the box, we need to properly care for them. What is the key to success? Regular cleaning of shoes, maintenance and proper storage off-season.
Contrary to appearances, taking care of shoes is neither laborious nor costly. It is important, however, to:
-
clean shoes regularly - if you wear them often, leather and suede shoes should be cleaned daily. Trekking shoes – after every hike, especially when we had to brave snow or muddy terrain. Sports shoes - whenever we see it's necessary - with noticeable dirt.
-
use appropriately selected products and tools. A soft cloth will suffice for grain leather. A cleaning cloth will come in handy in case of suede or nubuck.
-
remember about impregnation - it takes you a few minutes at most and protects shoes against moisture or road salt. Thanks to that, the shoes do not wear down so quickly and look like new longer.
Regular cleaning and maintenance are easy ways to refresh footwear, improve its appearance and ensure they last longer. The only question is: how to care for leather shoes, and how to keep nubuck or canvas one in good shape?

Once thoroughly brushed, apply a cleaning product suitable for coarse leathers on the shoes. Foams or cleaners for such materials will work great.
-
Then, remove the formulation using a dry or damp, soft microfibre cloth, gently cleaning the shoes.
-
Leave the clean shoes to dry in a well-ventilated room.
-
To finish, “comb” the shoes with a special nubuck brush. By doing so, you will restore the shoes' original texture.
It's worth impregnating nubuck shoes against salt and water, especially in the autumn and winter season. To do so, spray the shoes with waterproof spray, holding the can at least 20 cm away from them. After applying the product thoroughly, leave the shoes to dry completely. To keep them in good condition and make sure they're resistant to moisture, it is best to clean and impregnate nubuck shoes every 2–3 weeks.
