How to store, wash, and dry outdoor clothing – you’ll learn it all from this article.
In this article:
-
Washing: Opt for delicate wash cycle at low temperature (30°C). Use special washing liquids for outdoor gear, fasten up all the zippers and Velcro straps.
-
Drying: Avoid tumble drying. Outdoor clothes should be air-dried, away from sources of direct sunlight and heat.
-
Waterproofing: Regularly waterproof the clothes and use appropriate textile sprays to maintain the waterproof properties of your clothes.
-
Footwear cleaning: Clean with a soft cloth using soapy water. Leather shoes should be polished with special creams.
-
Storage: Store in a dry and well-ventilated place. Make sure the clothing is completely dry before stowing it away.
Short summary:
Caring for membrane clothes
A hiking jacket with a membrane is a fundamental piece of equipment of every outdoor aficionado. With frequent use, it becomes dirty quickly – that's why it’s worth knowing how to properly clean it. First of all, remember that washing membrane jackets doesn’t make them lose their properties. Quite the opposite, a dirty jacket may not protect you as good as it should; dirt and dust clog up the micropores in the membrane, compromising the breathability of your clothes.
Hiking jackets should be washed in a washing machine, with proper, special preparations used for waterproofing clothes. Do not use the spin cycle and always read producer’s recommendations found on the label. Do not use any fabric softeners and bleach. Remember to empty the pockets, fasten up all the zippers and Velcro straps and do not wash the jacket on the reverse side! The membrane is located on the inner side of the clothes, so it could get damaged.
Down jackets and vests – caring tips
Down is quite a gentle material – it easily clumps up and loses its thermal properties, making washing down jackets and vests a task that requires special attention. First of all, before you start, read all the detailed manufacturer’s recommendations on the label. If there's information that your down jacket requires dry cleaning, don’t risk washing it at home. But if there are no contraindications to clean it in a washing machine, go for it.
Start with preparing your jacket – empty and close all the pockets, fasten the buttons, Velcro straps and zippers, turn the jacket to the reverse side and stow away any protruding elements. Load only the jacket, with no other garments, into the washing machine and throw in 3-4 tennis balls. They will prevent the fill from clumping.
Down jackets should be cleaned in a washing machine, using detergents designed for down clothing. It is actually recommended to run your washing machine on an empty cycle to make sure there’s no leftover ordinary detergent in the dispenser. Choose the gentle cycle (e.g. wool setting) with maximum water temperature of 30°C and low spin cycle (max. 400 to 600 RPM). Do not, under any circumstances, use a fabric softener that may make the feathers stick together.
Dry the jacket in a well-ventilated place, but away from heat sources. Lay it flat, stretched out, and every two hours or so shake it to move the down and prevent it from clumping.

How to care for merino wool clothing?
Merino wool is increasingly more often used to produce outdoor clothing. Merino wool is very soft and pleasant to touch, hypoallergenic, breathable and has excellent thermal insulation properties – it protects against both cold and hot. What's more, merino wool effectively wicks away sweat and is antibacterial, making it remain fresh for a long time. So, how to care for clothing made of merino wool?
First of all, start with reading manufacturer’s recommendations on the label. As a rule, clothes made of merino wool can be cleaned in a washing machine; just remember to make sure the temperature doesn’t exceed 30°C. It's also recommended to select the wool cycle, and if your washing machine doesn’t have it, select the low spin cycle. Remember to dry the clothes away from sources of heat – certainly not on a radiator. The clothes that you’re not wearing at the moment – as, for example, it’s not the season for them – should be washed and placed flat in a wardrobe. When placed on a hanger, they may stretch due to their own weight pulling them down. If clothes made of merino wool pile (small balls appear on them), remove them with a special fabric shaver.

Washing and drying thermal underwear
Caring for thermal underwear is similar to caring for merino wool underwear – we clean it in a washing machine at a maximum temperature of 30°C, at low spin cycle, with no fabric softeners. Then, we dry it away from sources of heat – not in the sun and not on a radiator. If we want to be certain that the bacteria and unpleasant odours are removed, we can use special laundry detergents designed for such clothing.
Outdoor shoes – trekking footwear and trail running shoes
First of all – care for them regularly! Don’t put off cleaning your shoes for later. Regular, proper care will make them last longer.
It’s crucial to properly dry out your outdoor shoes after returning from the mountains. Untie them, remove the insoles and, if necessary, leave in a dry and well-ventilated space. However, just like it is with outdoor jackets, avoid sources of heat. Drying out shoes on the radiator may cause deformation and loss in elasticity.
Cleaning is the next step. Small stains can be removed with a brush. Use a wet cloth for larger ones. If the shoes are very dirty and muddy (e.g. after a spring trip), rinse them under running water and clean thoroughly using a brush. Water stream should be light. Remember not to pour water inside the shoe. You can use soap to clean particularly stubborn stains, and in the case of membrane footwear – special washing detergents, but remember not to use too much of them.
In the end, you can waterproof the shoes with appropriate products depending on the material they are made of (leather, nubuck, membrane). New trekking shoes are factory “proofed”, but this water-repellent coat wears off over time. So if you notice water soaking into the upper instead of beading up, waterproof them.
Regardless of the type of outdoor clothing, some rules are universal. Always dry it out completely upon returning home – moisture fosters the growth of bacteria and mould. Dry it away from sources of heat and never on the radiator. Wash clothes according to manufacturer’s instructions on the label. And remember that the better you care for them, the longer they will serve you, benefitting both your wallet and the environment.
